Jim knew his kidneys were failing but he wanted to be at home with his wife Carol, looking out over the beautiful countryside around Montgomery and admiring the dozens of birds that filled his garden.
Carol said she thought she may not be able to fulfill his request as he was in need of constant professional care – until help arrived in the form of a CLCA nurse.
“This man just appeared at the end of the hospital bed and he said they were taking Jim home, he did everything and before I knew it we were leaving the hospital,” said Carol.
“I really couldn’t have got through it without them, they set up a room for Jim in the conservatory – his favourite place – where he could look outside, and they were here each day from 8am to 8pm.
“Not only did they make me feel safe but it meant I could have a rest.”
Jim was cared for by his CLCA team until he passed away in 2018, and Carol says that during that time they formed a close bond with the nurses working with them, and that they became “part of the family”.
“They were very caring, very efficient and very knowledgeable but they were also our friends,” she added.
“They were always looking for ways to make Jim’s day more interesting and nothing was too much trouble for them, there were several times when they went above and beyond for us.
“I was also very impressed with the way they worked with other services and district nurses.”
